The Disco Ball Effect
No Single Piece of Mirrored Glass Carries the Light Alone
Disco balls are just broken pieces of mirrors stuck together.
Shine a light on them, though, and they transform the entire space.
That was the inspiration behind the launch of Casico Creative, the creative agency founded by my young friend, Cassandra Bernard.
I met Cassandra two years ago while mentoring alongside her in an entrepreneurship program for high school students. I remember being drawn immediately to her energy and that unmistakable dimpled smile. As an alumna of the program, she was back to support the new students. I watched her do something remarkable with team after team - her genius - helping people discover and tell the story behind what they were creating.
When I received an invitation to the launch of her new creative agency, I knew I wanted to be there.
Last Friday, an hour-long drive through the rain brought me to her launch party.
And what a celebration it was.
Disco balls. Empanadas. A DJ. A ribbon-cutting ceremony.
More than anything, though, I was struck by the crowd. The room was full of people of every age. I found myself wondering how a 24-year-old had assembled such an impressive community.
Then she began sharing her story, and suddenly the disco ball metaphor made perfect sense.
Many of us inherit the same script: work hard, gain experience, build connections, save money, and then, someday, when we finally have enough, we'll be ready to build something of our own.
Cassandra asked a different question:
What if I already have enough to begin?
She launched from within the ARK innovation hub, where she was already building relationships. She gathered photographers, videographers, designers, and other creatives into the Casico Collective. Instead of trying to become all of those things herself, she built an ecosystem that could grow with her.
By the time the launch party arrived, the room wasn't simply filled with supporters.
It was filled with collaborators.
People weren’t simply celebrating her success.
They were invested in it.
Watching Cassandra that evening, I was reminded of something I believe many of us spend years learning.
Independence and interdependence aren’t opposites.
They’re partners.
We don’t build our agency apart from our relationships.
We build it through them.
We nurture our ecosystems, and over time, they nurture us back.
The disco ball works because no single piece of mirrored glass carries the light alone.
The Nudge
Think about something you’ve been waiting to build, create, or begin.
Instead of asking:
What else do I need?
Ask:
Who and what is already around this idea?
Take ten minutes to map your ecosystem:
Who is already connected to this possibility?
Who can extend what I can’t yet do?
Who has knowledge, resources, access, or energy that could help it grow?
Who might be excited to build with me?
You don’t need to have the whole ecosystem figured out.
Choose one person from your map and start a conversation this week.
Not to pitch.
Not to prove your idea is ready.
Just share what you’re building and get curious about what might be possible together.
Because we don’t build meaningful things alone.
We build them through the ecosystems we create and nurture around us.
